This is a reaming excavation method and it therefore proceeds with a first pilot borehole heading, the backward motion being made with a bigger drilling head enlarging the borehole's diameter by reaming. The traditional methods are applied in a vertical direction of which there are two types: the standard one, where the reaming is made in an upwards direction and the reversible one, where it is made in a downwards direction. Nowadays, horizontal boring in a horizontal direction is applied and also raise boring techniques have been applied for the excavation of dumb drift staple shafts.
