These are drilling devices that are moveable on wheels, treads or tracks. They are equipped with various drilling arms which have hydraulic hammers and are used for heading in tunnels and galleries, bolting and transverse drilling, and benching with horizontal boreholes. The amount and size of the arms necessary, determined by the type and size of the jumbo, depends on the heading required, the tunnel section and the excavating to avoid over-tunnelling. Modern jumbos are computer-controlled converting them into digging robots.
