Exothermic process in which the sandy paste of a binding material becomes linked together, consistent and hard, due to the physical-chemical reactions that take place between the conglomerate and the water. There are two distinct phases known as the ?first setting' and the ?end setting', which it is important to be aware of the time during which the paste remains pliable and, therefore workable.
These two phases are determined by using the Vicat needle apparatus on a paste made with cement to be tested and with a quantity of water that makes it into a ?paste of normal consistency'.
