These are clastic (sedimentary) rocks whose grain size varies between 1/16 mm and approximately 4 microns. They are made up from quartz, alkali feldspars, some clay and organic matter. Bearing in mind the presence of the organic matter, they are usually divided up into inorganic and organic loams. They normally have low permeability, high capillarity, being very susceptible to liquefaction, are compressed with difficulty and usually have a moderate deformability being sensitive to vibrations.
