Hard shoulder

A longitudinal paved strip next to the carriageway, between its exterior edge and the deck's border, which is not for motor vehicle use except under exceptional circumstances. It is a part of the transversal section of the carriageway that contributes to the pavement's structural resistance at its edge and improves working and safety conditions of the traffic circulating on the carriageway. It has different minimum widths and functions, depending on the type of road by which it is situated, the normal width being between 1 and 1,5 m.
