These are clastic (sedimentary) rocks, made up from a high percentage of quartz. Quartz is an element which is the most resistant and unchanging to sediment suffering processes and which is therefore the most capable of reaching this degree of division. An arbitrary limit has been set (for the majority of the average 4 mm in diameter source) for the clastic components grain for which, under this size, the components are called sands and above it they are called gravel. When the sands are hardened, the rocks are called sandstone; when the gravel is hardened, the rocks are called conglomerate.
