The action of subjecting the reinforcement (which will be highly-resistant steel and made up of cables, cordons or bars), to a tightening or traction force prior to concreting.
When the concrete has acquired sufficient resistance, the reinforcements are freed from their provisional anchors and, by means of adhesion, the force previously exerted on the reinforcements is transferred to the concrete. This causes a deformation or camber opposite to that which will be caused when it takes the load. End deformation is thereby reduced, meaning that greater spans can be achieved and heavier loads supported.
