In 1990, the European Union developed the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme Regulation (EMAS). This Regulation is compulsory for the Member States although it is voluntary for industrial companies/manufacturers, which came into force in April 1995.
The EMAS key points are:
- Third party verification.
- Legal requirement's compliance.
- Environmental impact management.
- Environmental performance improvement.
- Public information availability.
The EMAS Regulation is made up of a group of articles and appendices that includes the requirements applicable to the organisations and the State Members, in terms regarding the establishing of competent bodies and EMAS accreditation systems.
