The subterranean level of the layer of free water present in a particular soil. The water table can vary seasonally, due to rainfall and evaporation.
The position of this water table has an important influence on the construction process and safety of the works, particularly when working with slopes and ditches. In these cases, it is essential to set up a network of drains and wells, or adopt specific construction techniques (sheet piling), to lower this level or to keep the works free of water.
