The tilt or dip of a stratum is the dihedral angle that the plane of the stratum forms with the horizontal, and is measured by the angle that the line of maximum incline forms when traced over the stratum, with its projection over the horizontal plane. A pendulum or inclinometer is used to measure the tilt. They are included in geological compasses, and the compass is held on vertical plane over the maximum slope line of the stratum to directly measure the angle shown on the pendulum.
