Mechanical pre-splitting or pre-cutting in hard soil or soft rock, which consists of introducing a prevault prior to each advance (in tunnel-building). Pneumatic mortar is used to refill the gap left by an appropriately guided full-facer. The theoretical thickness of the prevault can be from 10 to 30 cm and the length of its tiles is approximately 3 to 45 m, with overlaps of 0.5 to 1 m.
