The limit or threshold, as defined by Atterberg that separates the semi-solid state from the plastic one. Granulometry provides a first approximation of the identification of the soil, but sometimes this approximation is not very clear. In this regard, Atterberg defined three limits: shrinkage or consistency, plastic and the liquid.
The liquid and plastic limits are determined by the fraction of soil that passes through an A.S.T.M. No. 40 sieve (0.1 mm).
