Flashboards

These structures (of an ancillary nature) are reduced-height dykes, allowing for a river to be temporarily diverted during dam building. In very narrow valleys, one or more tunnels are normally dug into the slopes for diverting the river. These structures are also suitable for subsequent use as overflow channels or feeding channels for a hydroelectric power station. In dams with loose materials, the flashboard is normally built into the design for a given section of the same.
