A discontinuous surface, a fracture, in which a relative displacement of one the parts has been produced in relation to the other. When tensions cause the rocks inside the crust of the earth exceed their specific limit of resistance, a rupture is produced between them, according to a complex series of planes that coincide with the direction of minimum resistance, depending on the direction of the tension or pressure suffered.
