These are compounds or blends of chemical compounds, which burn or break up quickly, generating great quantities of gas and heat, and, consequently, sudden bursts of pressure. Explosives may be split into two main types:
- Low explosives, which burn at speeds of centimetres per second.
- High or instant explosives, which detonate at speeds of between 914 and 9,140 metres per second.
The specific features of explosives include, on the one hand, the fact that they can be easily detonated, and, on the other hand, resistance to certain levels of heat, cold or damp.
