A topographic level for determining how horizontal a line or a plane is. It has the advantage that it does not require levelling in the direction of measurement every time it is used. It normally has a spheric and a thoric level, but to make precise level measurements it also has a split bubble that is levelled in the direction of levelling. The compensator system can consist of mirrors, suspended prisms or pendulum mechanisms.
