A binocular optical instrument by means of which two flat images of the same object, taken from different view points, give the sensation of a single image in relief. There are three types:
- Refraction: which has looking glasses with supports, with two convergent lenses with the same focal distance. This type offers the possibility of separating the lenses a distance equal to that existing between the pupils (65 mm), which does not allow the entire longitudinal surface to be observed.
- The reflection type features a reduced distance between the pupils, to avoid the dark area.
- The mixed type, which is like the reflection one but with magnification.
