The gradient is the theoretical line that is projected in space. On intersecting with the land, the vertical plan that contains this line will cross the land with a further line, which is the trace. The points of the trace and the gradient have the same planimetry coordinates but different heights, and this height difference is called the red mark. It will be positive if the designed line is above the natural land, meaning that it will have an embankment. If it is negative the opposite is true, and it will have a levelling. For successive cross-sections throughout the trace, we will have areas of levelling and embanking and their respective heights.
