These are installed to avoid bad smells in bathrooms and kitchens, and also to ensure evacuation of waters without creating depressions and air pressures in the evacuation pipes. There are three methods: primary ventilation (the drainpipes communicate with the atmosphere at the highest points), secondary ventilation (installed in a pipe parallel to the drainpipe, communicating with it every two floors, and also fitted with a primary ventilation drainpipe) and tertiary ventilation (all the individual siphons and all the siphon boxes are connected with the main pipework parallel to the secondary ventilation drainpipe).
