These are canalisations able to transport water from tanks to the supply points. The canalisations or pipes that make up the network are called arteries. Larger diameter pipes are called main arteries, while the remainder are known as secondary, tertiary, etc., in accordance with the reduction in their size, down to the final points or branch pipes. Water must always be taken from these final branch pipes. There are three types:
- Branch or open distribution: a trunk artery, from which the secondary ones leave, and from these the final branch pipes.
- Mesh or closed distribution: closed rings, linked together in a network.
- Mixed distribution.
