Siphons are hydraulic seals or water closures which prevent air passing through the piping. When water is not flowing, the pipe remains empty and gases circulate, in the form of bad smells. In order to avoid this, siphons are employed. They comprise a curved U-pipe such that, when water remains trapped at the bottom, air cannot pass. A siphon must be executed for wastewater piping in practically all types of apparata.
