When water circulates through piping at high speeds, it is said to have energy in movement. This is the case, for example, when a tap is turned on. If the tap is brusquely turned off, the retention of water generates vibrations and noises in the pipes, resulting in brusque braking of the water. This is what is referred to as a pressure surge. Anti-pressure surge devices are installed to combat this. The most widely-used types are small deposits, one chamber filled with gas and the other filled with water. When the pressure surge occurs, it is absorbed by the gas.
