This key or valve is principally used to turn the flow of water on or off, without the need to enter the building. The supply company is in charge of it and it is normally activated by a mechanical key, known as a flat spanner. They must be fitted in single-purpose containers, normally on the pavement outside the building. The manhole valve is of the male type and features a rapid on-off system, of a ¼ turn. They are also called a square bar valve. Once turned on, they offer low resistance to water flow.
