When a system is used for a user or a home, it is called an individual domestic hot water production system. A branch of water coming from the cold water supply is conducted to an autonomous individual system, which is capable of heating it. Water heaters can be:
- Instantaneous: producing hot water instantly.
- Accumulator-based: slowly heating large quantities of water, and accumulating it.
- Combination: a combination of the previous two systems.
