This consists of steel piping, installed vertically, with its origin on the street. It is accessible to the firefighting service and communicates with all the interior floors via valves. Said valves, two per floor, may be connected to portable hosepipes. The pipework is normally empty, and therefore receives the name dry column. This system avoids unravelling hosepipes on staircases. In the case of a fire, the portable hosepipe is connected to the mains supply or that of the particular flat/floor where said fire occurs, and a cistern lorry pumps up the water to the hosepipe via the column.
