Weighing scales

An instrument used to measure forces, solids and weights, by comparison. It is made up of a good quality lever and noticeably equal arms, called a cross, which is sustained on a horizontal support plate. The plates hang from the ends of the cross. In the centre, there is a large vertical needle, the pointer, whose end scans a graduated arc. Automatic balances are made up of only one plate and are based on the deformation of a spring, measurable directly over a dial. These are being substituted by electronic scales.
