Varnishes

A resinous substance made up using the pigment, the paint vehicle or binder and the volatile carrier or thinner which is colourless at the pigment stage. After the application of surface coats this becomes a waterproof film which is solid, smooth, generally transparent and colourless, with either a glossy or matt finish. It is used on wood, metal or cement to protect them from the environment and to make them shine or over paintings as a fixer using a brush or polisher. There are varnishes for outdoor and indoor use. They can be classified on a binding basis depending if the binder is oil, synthetic or polyurethane respectively used on oily, synthetic or enamelled varnishes.
