Scribe gauge

This is a wooden instrument used for tracing and checking straight and parallel lines. It is made up of a wooden board crossed by a batten, provided with a steel tracing point. A wedge allows the length of the batten to be set. To trace a straight line in stonemasonry, slide the wooden board over one of the worked faces of stone, this has to be perpendicular to the surface that it is going to trace, or in carpentry, over the various sides of the piece of wood that one wants to reduce to a required size.
