Hand planes

A carpentry tool used to smooth the wood by pulling off wood shavings; it is also used to give wood an even and flat surface. Made up of an embedded hard wood quadrangular prism, a transversal slit and held by a quoin, it is made from alloy-cast iron with an edge sticking out from its lower side. A variety of carpentry planes exist in various shapes and sizes and are normally only differentiated by the shape of their blade. There is the spoke shave for making indentations; the jack plane for smoothing surfaces; the rebate plane to make grooves; the moulding plane to achieve a ribbed surface, the very long jack plane, the short jack plane, the rabbet plane, etc.
