Carpenter's hammer

Also called a ?claw hammer'. It is a knocking instrument made up of a handle and a head, normally made from hardened forged steel, which only has one face for hitting and on the opposite side a claw serving to pull out nails. The ?striking face' has the shape of the frustrum of a cone or pyramid and the ?claw' is re-curved and split. With regards to the handle, which can be wooden, steel, fibreglass, and other compounds, carpenters usually prefer American walnut as they say that this wood lessens vibrations.
