Drilling involves the extraction of the material that occupies the space within a hole (this may not be necessary as in the case of tampered piles) and as a prior manoeuvre the material is crushed easing its extraction. There are two types of crushing systems: percussion and rotation. There is a variation of the percussion system by applying a rotation to the hammer drill to avoid the tapping tool locking, which is known as rotary-percussion. The material can be mechanically or hydraulically extracted.
