The pavement's structural design factors are: the traffic, the formation level and the characteristics of the pavement materials.
From the traffic's point of view, in the Standard approved in the Order of the 23rd May 1989 (now repealed, finding the FOM/3460/2003 Order of the 28th November in force that approves the pavement sections of the road directive standard 6.1-IC) the concept of an equivalent type of axle is considered, this being the single 13 ton axle. The number of tandem axles is applied in correspondence with the single axle, according to the repealed standard.
