Retroreflection

Ability of some materials to reflect the best part of incident light in the opposite direction on a surface that is in the same direction. It is mainly used in personal protective equipment (waistcoats) and vertical or horizontal road signs so that they are visible in reduced visibility conditions or at night, when the light from vehicle's headlights comes into contact with them. They are achieved by means of adhesive sheets, reflective coating (vaporised aluminium film), resins and glass micro-spheres or micro-prisms (produce light reflection). They are measured in millicandellas by lux and square metre (mcd/lux.m²).
