Compass

An instrument that measures directions or angles formed by the direction of the needles on the dial between a line of sight and magnetic north, and varies between 0 and 400 centesimals. The tachymetric compass has an engraved bevel around the compass, which is used for horizontal readings and another piece with a lens for vertical ones. This lens is engraved with stadiometric threads to measure distances. It has currently fallen into disuse as a topographic instrument.
