Dilatation joints

These pipes dilate with heat and contract with cold. These movements, tending to stretch and shrink the pipes, create internal tensions in the material from which they are made. These tensions need to be released somehow so that they do not cause fissures in the piping. To achieve this, dilatation joints are fitted, at a distance which varies in accordance with the dilation coefficient. Dilatation joints are therefore devices which allow for relative movements between two parts of a structure.
