Turpentine

Also called spirit of turpentine, it is a product obtained by the distillation of rosin. It is made up of turpenic hydrocarbons whose composition depends on the type of pine that the rosin comes from. It is a colourless volatile liquid, insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol. It is used as paint thinner and for the manufacture of paints and varnishes, however it is becoming obsolete and being replaced by other hydrocarbons.
